Appendectomy
An appendectomy is the surgical removal of the appendix, which is usually performed due to acute appendicitis. It is a routine procedure that can be performed laparoscopically or with an open surgical approach, ensuring a speedy recovery for the patient.
Cholecystectomy
Cholecystectomy is the removal of the gallbladder, usually due to cholelithiasis or cholecystitis. The laparoscopic technique is the most commonly used method, offering less post-operative pain and faster recovery compared to open surgery.
Mastectomy & Ogectomy
Mastectomy is the surgical removal of the breast, while lumpectomy is the removal of only the tumour, leaving the rest of the breast intact. These operations are performed to treat breast cancer or as a preventive measure in people at high risk and can be combined with rehabilitation techniques.
Colon resection
Colectomy is the surgical removal of part or all of the colon and is used for conditions such as colon cancer, polyps and inflammatory bowel disease. The surgery can be performed openly or laparoscopically, offering better post-operative results and faster recovery.
Thyroidectomy
Thyroidectomy is the surgical removal of part or all of the thyroid gland and is performed in conditions such as hyperthyroidism, nodules or thyroid cancer. With modern surgical techniques, the operation is safe and the hormonal balance can be maintained with appropriate replacement therapy.
Frequently asked questions
When is it necessary to remove the appendix?
An appendectomy is necessary when there is acute appendicitis, an inflammatory condition that can lead to rupture of the appendix. It is an emergency surgery performed mostly laparoscopically, ensuring a quick recovery.
How long is the recovery time after laparoscopic cholecystectomy?
Most patients return to daily activities within 5-7 days after a laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Full recovery usually takes 2-3 weeks, with avoidance of strenuous exercise for the first few days.
What complications can arise after a colectomy?
Possible complications include infection, bleeding, leakage from the surgical bowel joint and changes in bowel habits. However, the use of modern surgical techniques significantly reduces the risks and ensures a faster recovery.
When should I contact my surgeon after the operation?
You should contact your surgeon immediately if you experience severe pain, fever, redness or discharge of fluid from the incision, difficulty breathing or unusual complications. Regular post-operative follow-up is essential for a safe recovery.
How can I prepare for a thyroidectomy?
Preparation includes clinical and laboratory testing, discontinuation of specific medications (such as anticoagulants) if needed, and informing the patient about the procedure and postoperative course. Most patients return to daily activities within a few days.
